Manda was shocked to discover that hell isn’t the only punishment for sin; that it is one of three types of death. It felt like defeat to know that she owed so much to God, and now she was on a mission to know what she could do about it.
“You can’t do anything,” her pastor said, “but God has done it for you.“
God defeated physical death: from period to comma
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
For many people, physical death is the period at the end of the sentence. But those who believe in Jesus will live again after they die. Physical death no longer seems like such a terrible thing. People who trust in Jesus still die, but for them, death has lost its sting.
God defeated spiritual death: new life in Christ
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.
Remember that spiritual death is separation from God on account of our sins. But because Jesus was punished in your place, and if you believe in what he’s done, God now looks at you as someone whose sins have been paid for. It no longer keeps you from being near Him. In fact, His Holy Spirit has come to live in your heart. This is an irreversible change. Once God has made a person spiritually alive, they cannot go back to being dead.
God defeated eternal death: the gift of eternal life
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Remember that eternal death means to be tormented forever in Hell. But God has conquered this type of death as well. Not only do those who believe in Jesus not have to experience eternal death but they receive eternal life in its place. This is what a person experiences when they live again after they die physically. It means to live the fullest, most beautiful type of life in the presence of God forever – not in this sin-stained world but in heaven and on the new earth that He will create.
Did you notice what one thing there is in common to be saved from the three types of death? You must believe in Jesus. You must believe that when he died on the cross, it was the perfect solution to the sin problem in your life. You must believe that it’s not anything that you (or I) can do, but that it’s what Jesus did that matters.
Do you believe?
